We have undergone a rebrand within Greater Manchester to become the Citizens Advice Service operating in your area.
Citizens Advice is independent, expert advice that’s completely free for everyone. It’s specialist legal advice, face to face and doorstep support, and continually updated online advice. Our doors opened in 1939, that’s more than 75 years ago!
Our Mission is to create the conditions in which people achieve a fair deal for themselves and others, and to work toward ensuring that no one in our society experiences unfair treatment by exercising their rights or receives poor or inadequate advice.
Our Services
At Citizens Advice SORT Group Ltd we offer a wide variety of free services to meet your needs.
We are accessible by multiple channels including telephone, face to face appointments, web chat, WhatsApp and self help online 24/7. Our specialist support for Universal Credit and energy projects has earned us recognition as a leader in our field of expertise. We also provide advice to vulnerable groups including Deaf advice, which is provided through the support of our Signature accreditations.

Volunteer-Driven Charity
Citizen Advice SORT is a charity run by volunteers. Volunteers play a vital role in our services and are part of the great work we do to support our local communities. We’re sure that you will gain just as much from the experience as we do as an organisation.
- Free, confidential, advice givers. Choosing Citizen Advice SORT means access to wide range of free, independent advice tailored to your circumstances. We understand that people often need legally protected advice, which is why we have specialist teams in Universal Credit, Judicial Reviews, Employment, and Energy.
- Inclusive services. Our advice keeps our wide range of communities and backgrounds in mind. For example, our Deaf clients who are able to use our online Booking page or video relay services. We all know how complicated some issues can potentially be, so when you don’t know where to look, Citizen Advice SORT can guide you through.
- Proven impact. In 2017 our clients recorded over £19 million increased household income. If you’re in a spiraling situation, we can help development plans around managing your finances, negotiating with creditors, budgeting tips, finding additional income, grants, and reduction in expenditure.
Making a difference in our community
Impact Stories
We support people across Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford, and in the last year we’ve made a real difference to our communities. Helping to resolve nearly 30,000 problems, increasing household income by over £19 million and helping tackle and prevent injustice across a range of issues. Every year, we aim to provide advice and support to some 60,000 people.
Our legal and advocacy officers helped us to help 42,112 people last year. Volunteering with Citizens Advice SORT Group Ltd provides individuals with the knowledge they need in order to solve the wider problems their community is facing. Volunteers are ubiquitous throughout the delivery model supporting paid staff to provide the information and advice clients need to find strategies and solutions to solve their problems.
“I didn’t respond to my letters about parking fines and debts, but through the intervention of SORT Help I have managed to clear my debts and parking fines. Now the stress and worry have gone away, I have gained some self-confidence and no longer feel afraid to open my mail. It is like a lifeline to services that have otherwise disregarded me”.
